Portugal: Interdisciplinary Arts Performance is an immersive exploration of museum-based interdisciplinary performance. Through this course, students will delve into themes inspired by the Museu do Carro Eléctrico in Porto, Portugal. In addition, students will participate in a collaborative development process culminating in a site-specific performance of dance and music, to be showcased at the museum. The project includes rehearsals, readings, and live performances, offering students a unique opportunity to expand their artistic practice while engaging deeply with a new cultural context.
To enhance their understanding of Portuguese art and culture, students will also travel to Lisbon and surrounding towns, visiting art museums, historical sites, and sources of inspiration for their creative work. Porto’s vibrant atmosphere, scenic beauty, and accessible scale make it an ideal location to explore Portugal’s cultural legacy. The city is enriched with theaters, concerts, and museums that reflect the artistic depth and diversity of the country.
Students will participate in a 3-week rehearsal process, live performances, museum visits, and research on artwork.
Rubén Graciani Bio:
Rubén Graciani is the dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts at James Madison University and a dance professor. Throughout his academic career, he has held leadership positions at institutions such as Point Park University and Skidmore College, standing out in department management, curriculum development, and the organization of large-scale events, including an international dance festival.
At the same time, he has built a notable artistic career as a dancer and choreographer, collaborating with prestigious companies and presenting work on international stages. His work is recognized for its artistic quality and has received several awards.
As the artistic director of RG Dance Projects, he has promoted interdisciplinary collaborations and participated in major festivals. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Choreography and Performance and remains active in supporting the arts through national organizations.
Jason Haney Bio:
Jason Haney was named a National Merit Scholar in 1988 and is a composer with an international career. His music has been performed in major venues and festivals across the United States and abroad by various ensembles.
He has received numerous awards and honors from prestigious organizations and has participated in well-known artist residencies. Among his works, his Symphony No. 1 stands out, premiered in Germany in 2008. His most recent album, Resonant Edges, was released by Capstone Records.
