Extemporânea

The Extemporânea performing arts festival, organised by balleteatro, is a collaborative curatorial project between Flávio Rodrigues, Isabel Barros, Jorge Gonçalves and Né Barros, which consists of developing a programme of performances and/or performative installations, in which the artists are called upon to articulate their artistic practices with the social, economic and political conjuncture inherent to the location of each edition. The conceptualisation of the Extemporânea programme proposes an expansion of the notions of choreography and performativity to different social and geographical contexts in the city of Porto. With critical and discursive thinking, we invite artists to experiment with different presentation formats and audience reception modes, in terms of the space-time experience and the spectrum of possibilities between audience participation and contemplation.

The third edition of Extemporânea takes place on 5 July 2025, with a temporary occupation of various commercial areas in the Cedofeita Shopping Centre. The heterogeneity and marginality present in this shopping centre are indicative of the changes in the retail paradigm in the urban fabric of the city of Porto, and here a series of socio-economic dynamics take shape that configure different scales of proximity to the ways in which artistic proposals are received and exhibited. Anna Effe, Beatriz Albuquerque, Cristina Mateus, Júlio Cerdeira and José Alberto Gomes are the artists invited to create performance activations and installations for various shops, galleries, showcases and exhibitors, in which they equate the transparency and materiality of these commercial display devices with their speculative condition and the transaction of the value of artistic work.
