Círculo da Voz

Círculo da Voz is an improvisation and vocal creativity laboratory that was founded in 2017 by singer Manuel Linhares.
These sessions aim to understand the voice as a possibility of artistic and individual expression, but also as a manifestation and construction of a common space, through circlesinging and other exercises in singing and group improvisation. Contemporary techniques for working the voice in groups, other than the traditional choral forms, are studied in depth, based entirely on improvisation to create compositions and foster the musicality of its participants. What Círculo da Voz proposes is the search for a form of spontaneous vocal expression that promotes musical development, improvisation and creativity.
These sessions are aimed at singers, amateurs or professionals, as well as actors, dancers or performers who like to sing and wish to explore the artistic abilities of their voice and body. But they are also open to anyone who likes to sing and explore their artistic creativity, without necessarily having previous studies or musical experiences.
The aim of Círculo da Voz is to bring singing and improvisation to a growing number of people, developing an artistic community of singers and improvisers. Singing has a strong therapeutic component, stimulating the body and mind and helping to release the natural tensions of everyday life, which naturally brings a better well-being and quality of life for its participants.
Manuel Linhares is a jazz singer based in Porto who has been dedicated to performance, composition, improvisation and teaching. He has performed on stages in Europe, the United States or Brazil and studied with great references in music and improvisation, including Theo Bleckmann, Judy Niemack, Gretchen Parlato and even the unavoidable Bobby Mcferrin and the extraordinary Meredith Monk. Manuel Linhares has extensive experience as a facilitator of workshops and musical retreats. We can highlight his role as an assistant at the artist Meredith Monk's workshop in December 2018 in New York. In 2019, together with the singer Sofia Ribeiro and the beatboxer Rizumik, he creates a biannual improvisation retreat in Portugal under the name “Vocal Being Retreat”. And in August 2019, he was invited to be an assistant professor at the “Circlesongs” workshop by singer Bobby McFerrin in New York.
