Uma coisa de sangue is a dance-theater piece that seeks to look at traditional family and social structures and question the influence they have on the construction - or destruction - of individual freedom. Through the study of philosophical and political theories of freedom, social contracts and counter-cultures, the play invites the audience to reflect on their conduct, morals, ethics and current social trends of extreme and separatist thinking.

The autobiographical solo is born out of the need to record the passage of time on video. The ever-changing body seeks to control time within its own rules. How to be available for the unpredictable? Through collaboration between video, sound and movement, in the (de)construction of different landscapes that develop through the body. The projection provides a double exploration of the intimate/personal place and the common place. The sound drives the
memories that seek a new temporal space. Who am I in the now versus what is the world like in the now are questions that I'm interested in bringing into the creative space and discussing with the team and the viewer. In an attempt to identify the changes taking place in society, cultures and the world over time. Where are we going?
So, since we are both aware of the outside and of our spirit, and since our spirit is a landscape, we are at the same time aware of two landscapes. Fernando Pessoa

The work starts from a reflection on what lies between life and death, the two things that govern the world, equalizing and transversal to all people. The concept focuses on the idea of the intermediate places between these two facets and those that derive from them - joy and sadness, lightness and mourning, celebration and funeral.
Starting from these apparently opposing notions, we question their rigidity and
their contrasts, drawing new lines on a map of redefinition between being dead and being alive. In this way, the show recovers the concept of a "funeral festival", reflecting on the end and utopia within the context of ceremony and ritual. When do the two meet? Where do they distance themselves? For forty minutes, the six performers pay homage to and
the panoramas that reveal themselves, celebrating time and space and discovering new ways of combining movement, sound and voice. The music emerges as an extension of the bodies that give life to thoughts and allegories about these "other places", through unison, contrasting intensities and melodramatic emotions. It is a sharing of reflections on being and being, which proves to be timeless and necessary for the general public in its different stages of life.

A transdisciplinary exploration, the DA24 will take you to a personal journey of architectural choreography, exploring the way we engage, perceive, and create space by moving. It is an invitation to open up a fresh perspective through the experience of moving, and relate anew to the world around us; to the emotions of objects and materiality; to the childhood memories that the space conjures up; to the speed of the streets where we walk every day; and to the quality of light where we have yet been in our imagination… And perhaps to question what makes us move, and to start asking new questions about the construct of the city, architecture and the life that contains. All through our thinking body and moving mind because the world is ever changing and never static.
This year, DA would like to think deeper in the idea of ‘becoming’ as a transformational process through which we constantly renew ourselves while being present in time and space. In philosophy, the idea of ‘becoming’ brings forward the process of change, transformation, and evolution. All what exist are in constant flux transitioning from one state to another, and as a consequence, we are always in the continuous flow of dynamic relationships and events.
So, let’s move with our conscious mind in the constant becoming. We are all process, a happening amongst other happenings that are in the state of constant change in relation to one another. DA24 encourages the participants to dive deep into the ever-changing relationalities as dynamic architectural conversations in the city of Porto, a terrain of the oblique. By translating our spatial engagement and felt senses into movement vocabularies, DA24 will culminate in a collective performance as experimental architectural dialogue.
We will listen to the voices and desires of the space and the place through the choreography of our moving bodies. Invigorating movement sessions will awaken our spatial awareness, while playful activities experiment with architectural ideas. With individual inner motivations and senses, participants will learn to express embodied ideas through the physicality of the body and choreography. Nestled within the heart of the city, our field of operation are artist residency space at INSTITUTO, also the dance studio at Balleteatro, both our partners in Porto. The urban streets and public spaces rich with culture and culinary delight will also be our playgrounds. There will be a day of excursion to visit wonderful architectures that Porto has to offer.
Open to all for those who work and study in architecture and spatial practice, as well as social and cultural practice in wider context, DA Summer Lab hopes that the participants encounter and challenge something unfamiliar or even strange. Because it is these moments of fresh encounters when our creative intuition works at its best and discover something of lasting importance. Choreography as an agency for architecture encourages something a little autobiographic that reflects who we are through moving, and moving together towards creating collective experience.
Expect the infectious happiness of moving together!
No prior experience in dance and choreography necessary, only your curious self!
balleteatro hosts residencies, for which it opens applications, occasionally, at periods to be defined. There are currently no open calls in progress. // At the time of registration, residencies by competition aim to create an opportunity for artists to develop specific projects within the performing arts in conditions of creative immersion. Applications must refer to a specific work project and must foresee at least one action that can be opened to the city. This action should not be confused with a final presentation resulting from the laboratory itself. The projects in the competition must foresee working with local people to be selected according to criteria defined by the author(s) of the project. The project file must contain: project presentation; title; artistic area; synopsis; participants' biographies; schedule; other existing supports and in what format; other elements considered relevant.
This material should be sent to producao@balleteatro.pt.
The duration of the residencies may vary depending on the specificity of the selected projects. If the project continues in the future, balleteatro should be referred to as a co-producer.
