Carlota Castro
She has a degree in History from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto and a Master's degree in Artistic Studies from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Coimbra - a cycle of studies for which she received a merit scholarship. She is currently attending the Doctoral Programme in Art Education at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, where she hopes to continue her research into the intersections between art education and socio-political intervention.
As a playwright, and with a particular interest in political and documentary theatre, she highlights the works ‘Terror and Misery in the Fall of Democracy’ (2021), ‘Who's afraid of women without fear?’ (2022), ‘ÁGAPE-APÓFASI’ (2022), ‘Is the Revolution in my Attic?’ (2023) and ‘Do you know more than a ten-song poem?’ (2024). In the context of professional training, he emphasises the short plays ‘Mar.ias’ (2022) and ‘Pietà’ (2023), directed by Ricardo Correia and Jorge Louraço Figueira, respectively.
As far as art education and audience mediation are concerned, he emphasises his collaboration with the Eugénio de Andrade Senior University in the subjects ‘Art and Contemporary Thought’ and ‘The Sacred and the Profane’, as well as directing its amateur theatre group. He is also the co-director of the ‘Companhia de Espectadores’, a project of the Theatro Circo de Braga that was born out of the desire to make the time and space for reflection and contemplation available to the public.
She also works as a poetry and prose reader and trainer for various organisations (Festival SET, Livraria Exclamação, Plano Nacional das Artes, Porto Editora, Rádio ESMAE, Teatro Académico de Gil Vicente, Teatro Municipal do Porto and União das Freguesias de Aldoar, Foz do Douro e Nevogilde). She coordinates the Poetic Reading Laboratory at the Sever do Vouga Arts and Entertainment Centre - of which she was the creator - devising and staging monthly performances dedicated to the art of saying.
She was part of the Visões Úteis structure between January 2022 and July 2023, as artistic and communications advisor and responsible for the first edition of the research and knowledge transfer projects. In January 2023, she founded BALA - Núcleo Dramatúrgico, a horizontal association of emerging artists of which she is co-artistic director. The collective's first public performance, based on the unpublished text ‘O Cadafalso’, is scheduled for January 2025.
In the field of staging, he highlights the performance ‘Este Corpo Ainda’ (2022), an adaptation of Molière's ‘O Doente Imaginário’ (2023) and the creation of ‘REENACT NOW - Ibéria Sector 5’ (2023), the latter resulting from months of research in the archive of the International Festival of Theatre of Iberian Expression, looking for corporeal solutions to activate memory about the performing arts.
